ABOUT THE PROJECT

Albert Philippi Park was established in 1972 to provide facilities and recreation opportunities to boaters on the John Day River. Each year, 13,000 visitors dock at this boat-in park to cast a line, grill lunch, set up camp, take a swim, or just relax with friends and family.

In 2013, the park was permanently closed due to declining budgets and increasing costs. Its docks had been removed, its facilities aged, and the land became overgrown. This closure not only affected the local community but the nature enthusiasts across the Northwest as well.

In 2016, Philippi Park was successfully reopened through the partnership of the Opal Foundation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

RESTORATION PLAN

In March 2016, the Opal Foundation began working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in its efforts to restore, expand and improve Philippi Park. Successfully we were able to achieve the following by Memorial Day 2016.

  • Restore sand beaches
  • Obtained maintenance equipment (mower, trimmers, tiller, tractor, quad vehicle, generator, boat)
  • Installed onsite dwelling for camp host Installed swim dock with buoy line
  • Refurbished restrooms
  • Refurbished sprinkler system

Currently we are working towards completion of the following:

  • Install eco-friendly coin-operated showers & repair septic system
  • Create donation based day-use area
  • Obtain rental equipment that will provide income to park (kayaks, floats, gas BBQ, sports gear)
  • Build volleyball area and playground
  • Reestablish water ski docks
  • Establish walking/wildlife-viewing trails around campground perimeter
  • Interpretive Signage
  • Develop event calendar (fishing tournaments, boating events)
